Causal Mapping
"When two events happen in sequence, a narrator builds a bridge of intent. A programmer demands a test of causality."
Core Skill: Separating Chronology from Causation
A common technique in persuasive writing is Pacing and Leading. An author starts with a series of undeniable, easily observable truths (Pacing). Once your mind gets in the habit of agreeing with these facts, the author introduces an unproven causal link or conclusion (Leading).
To map out these narrative strategies, we look for chronological connections (e.g., words like "while," "as," "concurrently") used in place of real evidence of cause-and-effect.
